In Canada, the issue of carbon emissions has become increasingly prominent in recent years, as the country faces the consequences of climate change, air pollution, ocean acidification, reduced biodiversity, and economic costs.
Climate change is one of the most significant consequences of carbon emissions. The primary cause of global warming and climate change is the increased levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. These gases trap heat and cause the Earth’s temperature to rise, resulting in the melting of polar ice caps, rising sea levels, and changes in weather and precipitation patterns. Also, the more frequent occurrence of extreme weather events like hurricanes, droughts, and floods all have devastating effects on human lives, ecosystems, and economies.
The rapid increase in CO2 emissions due to human activities, such as burning fossil fuels for energy, has led to significant changes in the Earth’s climate system. It is essential to reduce CO2 emissions to mitigate the impacts of climate change and ensure a sustainable future for our planet.
Delivering on a promise.
The use of vehicles for delivery in the growing economy has contributed to increased carbon emissions and air pollution, exacerbating the already pressing issue of climate change. As the demand for delivery services increases, more delivery vehicles are on the road, resulting in increased traffic congestion and fuel consumption.
As a food delivery company, we at Fresh Prep know that our industry contributes to the carbon emissions issue in Canada. However, we are committed to taking action to tackle this issue and reduce our impact on the environment. We believe that business can be a force for good, and we are always looking for ways to reduce our carbon footprint and make a positive impact on our community.
Through our partnership with Onfleet, our last-mile delivery management software, we have been able to offset the impact of our fleet’s carbon dioxide emissions. That’s right—we’ve achieved net-zero emissions deliveries!
How it works.
With Onfleet, the CO2 impact of our delivery operations is calculated and we share costs to offset emissions by investing in Gold Standard, VCS, CAR and ACR-verified nature conservancy projects such as reforestation and old growth forest protection.
Through our partnership with Onfleet, we’ve been able to offset over 623 metric tons of carbon emissions from our fleet. Now, 623 metric tons of carbon seems like a very big number, but what does it mean?
Offsetting over 623 metric tons of carbon emissions is the equivalent of taking 270,891 cars off the road in Canada for one year, based on the average emissions and mileage of passenger vehicles in Canada.
It’s also equivalent to retrofitting and upgrading energy-efficient measures in 125,000 homes, or protecting approximately 310,000 hectares of forest (assuming a conservative estimate of 2 metric tons of carbon dioxide per hectare per year).
There’s no one-size-fits-all solution to climate change.
Reducing CO2 emissions is essential to slow down the pace of climate change and mitigate its impacts. There are several ways to reduce CO2 emissions, including increasing energy efficiency, using renewable energy sources, and reducing deforestation. Energy efficiency measures, such as improving building insulation and using energy-efficient appliances, can significantly reduce the amount of energy required for daily activities, thereby reducing CO2 emissions.
Reducing deforestation is another crucial way to reduce CO2 emissions. Forests play a critical role in absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere, and their destruction releases this carbon back into the atmosphere. Therefore, preserving and restoring forests is an essential strategy for reducing CO2 emissions.
That’s a key reason why Fresh Prep initiated the use of our reusable cooler bags instead of using cardboard boxes for our meal kit deliveries. The use of our reusable cooler bags helps to save approximately 7,600 trees every year, and that number continues to climb.
Carbon emissions are a pressing issue that needs to be addressed by all industries, including the newly growing food delivery industry. At Fresh Prep, we recognize our responsibility to take action to reduce our carbon footprint and protect the environment. We are proud to participate in the Onfleet Offset program, and we encourage our customers to join us in reducing their carbon footprint by continuing to integrate more eco-friendly choices into their daily lives. We must all take action to reduce carbon emissions and protect the planet for future generations.
