B Corp Month: At Fresh Prep — We Go Beyond

How We Go Beyond at Fresh Prep

Happy B Corp Month! We are proud to be a part of the B Corp community, a group of impactful businesses who go beyond the status quo and take action to transform the economic system.

At Fresh Prep, we are committed to sustainability, ethical sourcing, and social responsibility. We believe that business can be a force for good, and we are always looking for ways to reduce our environmental footprint and make a positive impact on our community.

Along with our fellow B Corp community, this month we highlight how we’re going beyond business as usual. Here’s how we’ve been working towards our vision of a truly sustainable business and healthier planet:

Plastic Waste Reduction

As a certified B-Corp we work to tackle plastic waste in various ways. One of the most significant steps toward our commitment to sustainability has been the development of our patented Zero Waste Kits. Cooking, in general, can involve countless single-use plastic packaging, which typically end up in landfills. Our team designed Zero Waste Kits to provide a more sustainable solution to how we securely pack ingredients and reduce the need for single-use plastics, where possible.

Every delivery using a Zero Waste Kit helps to divert ~19g of plastic waste from landfills. In 2022, 819,303 meal kits were delivered in Zero Waste Kits, which diverted ~15,560 KG of plastic waste from landfills.

Beyond the use of Zero Waste Kits, Fresh Prep partners with Urban Impact to ensure all single-use plastic can be responsibly recycled. Customers can easily recycle any single-use plastics by including them in the reusable cooler bag during a return pick-up.

Through our partnership with Urban Impact, 284,318 KG of plastic waste was diverted from landfills in 2022. Overall, Fresh Prep diverted 299,878 KG of plastic waste

Assuming the average weight of a water bottle is 20g per bottle, a total of 299,878 KG of plastic waste diverted from landfills is equivalent to ~14,993,900 plastic water bottles.

Deforestation Prevention

While other meal kit services use cardboard boxes to package their ingredients, we use reusable cooler bags that can be used over and over again. On average, it takes about 0.02 trees to make one pound of cardboard. The weight of a typical cardboard box used to deliver meal kits varies, but assuming an average weight of 0.5 pounds per box, we can estimate that it takes about 0.01 trees to make one box.

Using reusable cooler bags instead of cardboard boxes allowed Fresh Prep to save ~7620 trees in one year.

Net-Zero Carbon Emissions

As deliveries are core to the Fresh Prep business, we partnered with Onfleet, a last-mile deliver solution, to offset our carbon emissions. By participating in the Onfleet Offset program, we invest in their portfolio of ACR and VCS verified forestry projects.

The average passenger vehicle in Canada emits about 2.3 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, based on a mileage of 20,000 kilometers per year and an average fuel efficiency of 9.4 liters per 100 kilometers.

The carbon emissions offset by Fresh Prep’s delivery fleet is equivalent to taking 270,891 cars off the road in Canada for one year.

Food Waste & The Food Insecure

In the effort to further our commitment to food waste reduction and supporting local communities, Fresh Prep acquired Peko Box, Western Canada’s first “peculiar” & surplus grocery delivery service, in 2023. With Peko Box production integrated with Fresh Prep, this seamlessly streamlines food waste reduction efforts and marks another major step towards greater impact in tackling food waste.

Fresh Prep has also partnered with numerous organizations to Vancouver Food Runners, a local food recovery organization, to combat food insecurity whilst reducing food waste.

We Go Beyond Everyday.

Every day and every month (not just Earth Month), Fresh Prep is going beyond the expectations of business as usual. We believe that being a certified B corporation is just the beginning. We are committed to going above and beyond the status quo by investing in our planet and our communities. Sustainability and social responsibility are not just buzzwords for us – they are woven into the fabric of our company DNA.

At Fresh Prep, we are proud to be involved in a variety of initiatives that aim to solve the problems that exist within the food industry, while contributing to a better world. We know that business can and should be a force for good in the world, and we are committed to proving that every day.
